Namibia New Discovery

In the meantime there has been a major development in terms of SWA / Namibia Philately :

When Namibia became independent in 1990, there was of cause
no Namibia Definitive stamps, only the SWA ones that was still in
use from Independence 'till the 1st Namibia Defin. was issued on 2 Jan. 1991.

The inland postage rate up to October 1990 was 18c.  This is reflected on
the face value of the first 3 sets of Namibia Commemoratives.  By September
1990 the Namibia Postal Authorities has already received the proof sheets for a
Definitive to replace the SWA Defin. still in use.  These proofs was approved
and authorization given to the Govt. printer in Pretoria to commence with
the printing.

What has not been known up to now, and I have always wondered why they
never used the 7c ex the SWA Defin. (the nice red crystals), is that this stamp
would have actually been the new 18c stamp !!!!!
3 proof sheets was however printed and delivered for approval together with
the rest of the values. All these subsequently approved, but the 18c was never
printed again as it was not needed anymore due to the postal rates going up
to 20c and a 20c stamp of cause already existed.

Proof sheets was in the format of 8 panes of 25 stamps each = 200 stamps.
This means that only 600 of these stamps was ever printed.

"Standard Mail" overprint on 10c Definitive stamp

We have now received confirmation that this overprint was done in error, and that the total printing was on 100 sheets (1 000 stamps). One pack of 100 sheets of the 10c value was accidentally added to the pile of 50c sheets, overprinted with one of the plates used to overprint the 50c stamps, and never noticed by Namibia Post. This pack of 100 sheets was send directly to the Hepworth Arcade Post Office in Windhoek, frequented by business people, and the stamps mostly used up on business mail.  By the time collectors discovered the stamp, less than 100 mint stamps was still available.

Different setting of N$50 on N$10 stamp discovered !!

Towards the end of March 2006, a 2nd setting for this overprint was discovered by a Namibia collector.  News quickly spread and within a few days the handful of stamps that surfaced sold out. The total print has been confirmed as being 1 000 stamps (100 sheets), and current estimates are that only around 80 - 100 of these stamps exist in mint.  The reason why the stamp hasn't reached the collecting community earlier, is because it was send directly to, and used at the parcels department at the main Windhoek PO.

2 Different "Standard Mail" overprints on 20c exists !!!

It has come to light that 2 separate overprint settings exist of the Standard Mail on 20c. Plate 1 was a print run of 800 sheets (8000 stamps) where "Standard Mail" is in 1 line and the double bars at close together.  Plate 2 was a print run of 49 200 sheets (492 000 stamps) where "Standard Mail" is in two lines at top, and the double bars at top spaced wider.  As far as we could establish, more than 7000 stamps ex Plate 1 was used on regular inland mail before being discovered by collectors, meaning that less than 1000 exist in mint.  This will surely become a scarce item.

1st Printing : one line "Standard Mail" overprint at bottom & narrow spacing of double bar at top right.

2nd Printing : two line "Standard Mail" overprint at top left & wider spacing of double bar at top right.
